Thirty couples enjoyed a sunny day's bowls at Silloth which included a fly past of WWW2 aircraft and sounds of canon fire from the celebrations at the docks.
Harry and Sandra Parker took first prize and the trophy with 27 points, just edging out Alan Edmondson and partner by one shot.

Coors American Trophy, Sunday 31st May.
Sixteen triples played four games of seven ends in UV factor 30 sunshine to qualify for the top four play off positions.
Will Strong and Grant Allan came away as semi finalists and in a nail biting finish with scores level at the penultimate end, Alan Beaty, Ray Clark and Syd Brough prevailed over Marjorie Smart, Derek Nichol and David Wood.
Silloth's next open competition will be the popular American Mixed Triples on Saturday 18th July.

Men's and Women's bowls will be unified in 2011.
BOWLS England held its second Annual General Meeting at the New Connaught Rooms in London on Saturday 21st February.
During the meeting, the Presidential Team for 2009 was invested as follows:
Men’s President: Dennis Cousins (Norfolk)
Men’s Senior Vice-President: Chris Smith (Nottinghamshire)
Women’s President: Diane Ingle (Bedfordshire)
Women’s Senior Vice-President: Hazel Parnell (Durham)
Joan Balding (Lincolnshire) was appointed Junior Vice-President and will become Bowls England’s first ‘unified’ President in 2011.
Members backed proposals for the Affiliation Fee paid to Bowls England to rise by 50p per member in 2010. Members also voted in favour of an increase in the National Competition Fees to £2 per entrant in 2010.

Work has started to prepare the greens for the start of the new season and some maintenance and decorating is currently being finished in the club house.
Coors have indicated an increase in cost of supplies, as have other sources we purchase from so it looks as if we will have to introduce modest increases for bar prices early in March.

Very sad to report that John Hocking passed away this morning having been kept overnight in intensive care. John devoted a lot of his time to serving the Club both on the Committee and by undertaking many works of repair and maintenance over the years. Sadly, a combination of serious medical conditions meant that he was unable to get out and about and enjoy his bowling for a couple of years.

Sylvia Robertson passed away this morning.
Sylvia was a respected Past President of our club and a very competent bowler who represented Cumbria at County 'A' team level many times.

Derek Nichol was elected President at our AGM. Having served the Club well over many years and being familiar with all aspects of club management it was a popular choice by the members present.
The majority of last year's Committee offered themselves for re-election and Bill Aymes offered to undertake the office of Competition Secretary which was unfilled last year.

Presentation Night went off well, as did the trip to Scotland.
Most of the end of season work has been completed on the greens and some essential repairs are in hand for the clubhouse.
The next major event will be our AGM on Monday 1st December. A list is on the notice board for members who are willing to give up a little of their time to become part of the committee or to take on some of the little jobs that at the moment are becoming too much for the few who presently undertake most of the day to day duties already.
Please be prepared to contribute more to your club than just your subs.

Open Mixed Pairs, 9th August.
Apologies to all those who travelled and found that the competition was cancelled.
Unfortunately, the weather wasn't too bad until about 10.30am by which time some of you had set off, but in the interests of safety and the fact that nobody would like to spend four hours out in the rain we decided it was in everyone's interest to call it off.
Everyone's entry will be carried over to next year and we hope to see you then.
The next competitions are the annual men's open bank holiday Triples and Fours plus the September Pairs.

Sad to report that Iris Johnston passed away after a lengthy illness. The funeral service will be held at Christ Church on Wednesday 6th August. Condolences from everyone to Iris's family.

Just for a change we had a competition this afternoon that was held in glorious sunshine and all the competitors turned up.
Winners if the Open Mixed Fours were Syd and Sylvia Robertson accompanied by Oriole and Richard Hocking. Runner up was Sandra Gray's rink with Joan Graham coming third.
The next Open is the Mixed Pairs on the 9th August. A list of current entries is published on the front page of our web site but may be subject to change so keep an eye on it.
Normally the first filling is 11.00am.

With only five entries for the Sam Ashworth men's pairs it has been decided to cancel, which makes it a hat trick of competitions that have been abandoned recently mainly through bad weather. Let's hope we have more luck for the Open competitions which start shortly.
Our double rinks entry in the EBA competition had a good win recently over Maske BC which puts them near to the regional deciders.

The Johnny Lowes Trophy on Saturday was washed out. Fortunately the rain was heavy enough to make the cancellation decision in good time so competitors didn't have to travel to find out.
Our EBA entry made further progress by beating Northallerton BC on a neutral venue in the North East and Southport at Penrith.

The triples of Harry Parker, David Wallace, Will Strong and J.J.Graham battled through the miserable weather to qualify for the playoffs, with J.J.Graham going on to overcome Will Strong of Caldbeck in the final to claim the £100 first prize.

In a thrilling final, Ian Gallagher and John Baird of Carlisle Subscription came from one down with two ends to play to overcome the local pairing of Ryan Orchard and Paul Wallace by ten shots to eight.
President David Wallace congratulated all the competitors and those concerned with organising the event and providing refreshments throughout the day.

Commencing 10.30am, 4 games of 7 ends with a play off between the top 4 scores to decide the winners of the £100 first prize.

Does anybody know where we can obtain a 10/12 blade mower with at least a 24" cut?
Preferably a Ransomes like our own which now requires some tlc. Contact details can be obtained from our web site. Obviously, with the greens requiring cutting at least twice a week, we can't afford to have it out of service for repairs hence the need for a decent spare machine. Pick up can be arranged within a radius of Gretna, Penrith and Halwhistle or some agreement for delivery.
Bank Holiday weekend brings the first tournament on our greens - the Roland Starkie competition organised by the County with winning rinks from each green going forward to a series of playoffs.
Silloth members are reminded that entries for club competitions must be paid for in advance and submitted on forms available from the bar. The closing date is 18th May.

Howdy Doody,
Silloth A beat Aspatria B, 8-2 on Friday night and Silloth B were beaten 2-8 by Aspatria A. This was a good start for the A team who are defending their league title. The Silloth sides were wearing their new team shirts sponsored by West Silloth Motors. Former B team players Harry and Lewis Parker along with Adam Hocking have been signed up by the A team and made their debuts on Friday with mixed fortunes. The Parkers were part of winning triples but the youngster Hocking was a member of the only losing triple on the night along with the bookie Big Wal and the team captain Peck Orchard.
The A team will play their first home game of the season against Kirkbride on the 2nd of May followed a week later by possibly their hardest match of the season away to Wigton A.

From the Golf Course
Some good crack from the golf. Poor old shorty ran up a 13 on the short 9th hole yesterday. Charlie is having to bring a trailer load of sand to refill the bunker-he was having a good knock too, he needed a par 3 to be out in 40 instead he go a 13 to be out in 50.

Shorty walked in with our four ball. All he could talk about was how the Bird lost three times to the Rugby Club but still finished above them in the quiz league.

Our mower has had to have some serious servicing and repair work done and it should be back in action with the greens cut on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th April.

Opening day was a great success with an interesting flurry of hail stones for the last half hour.
The first official match is the league on the 28th April.
There is still some work to be done on the greens and our mower is currently undergoing a service so serious bowling will have to be put on hold for a few days.
Congratulations to our dominoes team who came runners up in the league with the last match deciding the final position in the table.
Presentation night is at Wheyrigg with details on the notice board.

First matches on 25 April with others to be played by arrangement between clubs before 30 June.
Our dominoes team finished runners up in the league with the presentation night to be held at Wheyrigg Hall.

Our County Secretary has kindly made the County Diary available for publication on our web site. It contains all the fixtures for competitions plus many relevant dates in the EBA diary.
For our own members, I must remind those that haven't paid this year's subscriptions yet that if they don't cough up by 29 February they will incur an extra fiver penalty fee.
If you that don't live locally I'm pleased to advise that we've had double glazing installed which looks much tidier than the old wooden frames and hopefully will provide better insulation and lower heating bills.

Men's entries for the County competitions have been sent off to meet the 31st January deadline.
Things have got so quiet that the clubhouse is now closed on a Saturday night until further notice, but can be reopened if members show sufficient interest. Apart from Monday nights it's business as usual though.
Dates for our open competitions will be posted on the website very shortly subject to approval by the County. Our dominoes and pool teams haven't set the leagues alight yet but there is still time to climb to the top.

Brian hadn't enjoyed the best of health for the past few months for which reason he resigned from the Committee earlier in the year. A keen and popular bowler, he will be missed by his many friends. Ten feet long, about two feet deep and three or four shelves to a height of about five feet would be ideal. We can arrange to collect from as far afield as Carlisle and Whitehaven.

Last night's Annual General Meeting was a qualified success with a reasonable turnout but the usual apathy from members with regard to committee work and other voluntary activities. The accounts reveal a tremendous success which has allowed us to undertake projects that would have been unthinkable a couple of years ago.
David Wallace agreed to undertake the office of President although the lack of Vice and Junior Vice Presidents means we may have the same struggle next year.
The Committee were reappointed en bloc.
There are plenty of small maintenance jobs needing done after the double glazing is installed in the next couple of months so volunteers would be particularly welcomed before the start of next season. Please see the Secretary if you can spare a couple of hours.
Subscriptions for 2008 remain the same with a £5.00 penalty for those failing to pay by the 29th February. See our web site for details.

I am told Presentation Night was a resounding success with an excellent buffet and entertainment. Dancing on tabletops was allegedly observed towards the end of the evening.
The greens are receiving some attention whilst there is still some warmth left and soon the benches will be stored in the locker room, so anybody wanting stuff out of their locker will need to be quick.
Our Annual General Meeting has been set for Monday 3rd December so please make a note in your diary. We are still obliged to inform every member by post, but in view of the current difficulties with deliveries it may be worth passing on this information to as many members as possible.

Important to note that only those who paid and played on the day or have since asked to have their names added are recorded. Please check and if you spot any errors report them as soon as possible.
The 5s & 3s season has got off to a good start with three wins out of three. No news yet from the pool team but with the short mat league having stated together with in house carpet bowls on Tuesdays and darts on Fridays we're looking forward to a busy winter season.
Plenty of members have purchased tickets for next Saturday's presentation night at £6.50 for a buffet and entertainment. The list for the buffet has been closed to allow the caterer time to prepare but non diners are welcome to attend.

Silloth "A" team won the league this year with a comprehensive win in the final game of the season. Celebrations went on into the early hours and repeated again on North Cumbria Triples League's Presentation Night at Port Carlisle BC.

Presentation Night is brought forward this year to Saturday 6th October (7.00pm for 7.30pm) before everyone forgets about this year's season.
Tickets are £6.50 per person and include a buffet and entertainment.
Please try to attend and make this year a success for Glynis and Robbie.
Last year all the benches were brought in from the greens and stored in the locker room to prevent vandalism, so if you need anything from your locker please get it as soon as possible.

An all Silloth final for the September Pairs, with President Robbie Litt and his partner Raymond Clark overpowering J.J.Graham and Colin Irving after an alleged outrageous fluke which saw a wick off an outside wood transform a five shot deficit to a single shot win in one end. At the end of the day it isn't how an end is won that is recorded on the score card.
The final club events are imminent with the annual visit of our friends from Scotland's Park Head BC next weekend, followed by a weekend visit to their territory a week or so afterwards. These matches are famous for their hospitality and a strong constitution is required.

Bank Holiday Weekend Results
Both the Saturday Triples and Monday's Fours were played in fair weather with Alan Prince's Triple from Whitehaven edging out Harry Parker in the final to take away the Clark Trophy. Syd Brough and Frank Wilson of Workington BC competed in the semi finals.
On Monday, Alan Prince tried hard for the double, but Alan Green's rink from Maryport BC skipped by Dennis Neale came through after a scare in the last end to take home the coveted Byer's Trophy.
Tomorrow sees the last of the Club's open competitions which is the September Pairs for men. At the last count there were 26 entries and a start time of 11.00am for the first filling.
The major news is that last night our "A" team won the North Cumbria Triples League with a comprehensive win in the last match. Congratulations to everyone concerned, and I understand the celebrations were held in the usual calm and understated manner on their return to the clubhouse.

Today's Open Mixed Pairs was played in showery conditions interspersed with heavier showers. The conditions didn't affect Dennis Neale of Maryport BC and the partner he acquired at very short notice however, as they turned out to be the eventual winners. J.Sherwen from Cleator Moor BC came second with the Silloth pairs of Oriole Hocking and Fred Whiting taking third and fourth places respectively. Special thanks go to Robbie and partner Glyniss who forfeited their entry to even the numbers up after one competitor failed to turn up. This meant that nobody had to sit out for a couple of hours if drawn against a "no show".
The three remaining open competitions are men only and played on a knock out basis.
The list of entries for the August Triples, August Fours and the September Pairs will be published on our web site shortly.

Two teams didn't show but fourteen others enjoyed an afternoon's bowling in fine but blustery conditions.

Last Saturday's Open Mixed triples provided a win for Brian Smith and his team from Workington closely followed by J.Walker of Whitehaven, Syd Robertson of Silloth and John Brew of Vulcan Park.
Every team turned up, and particular thanks go to Frank McKenna for taking Andy Ross's entry at the last minute.
Next Saturday we host the Mixed Fours Open with 20 entries. Play commences at 1.00pm and a list of teams will hopefully be published in the Evening News and the Cumberland News. The list is also behind the Club bar for any enquiries.
There is one place available in our 32 entry Open Mixed Pairs on the 11th August so first come, first served. The list will be published on our web site in the next couple of days.

A great double for the Parker family with Sandra qualifying for the national competitions at Leamington Spa in the two wood singles, and grandson Lewis claiming a place at Worthing in the under twenty five's singles. Paul Wallace will be very disappointed to have missed out at the last hurdle, especially after being all set to play and the tie being postponed for five days due to inclement weather.
Saturday's mixed triples has suffered a minor set back owing to it clashing with President's Day at Whitehaven. Two of their members' teams have had to withdraw but subject to nobody else pulling out, everyone will play the full four games.

Congratulations to Bill Jefferson and Robin Hurst for winning the Sam Ashworth Men's Pairs last Saturday, leaving Ryan Orchard and Colin Irving the runners up spot.
The draw has been completed for this weekend's Mixed Triples. Twenty four teams will play four games of seven ends commencing at 1.00pm. Refreshments will be available during the half hour break after the first two games.

Last Saturday's Frank Easton Mixed Triples competition was played in moderate weather with some very heavy showers. This didn't put off Lewis Parker and family who amassed 25.5 points to win the trophy by 1.5 points over Maisie Allan & Co. Close behind in 3rd and 4th came Syd Robertson's triple and Fred and Angie Whiting accompanied by Maisie's husband.
Next weekend, the Sam Ashworth Men's Pairs knockout competition takes place on Saturday 14th. The entry sheet has gone up rather late so if you wish to enter, please do so ASAP so the draw can be completed on Thursday evening. Kick off has been brought forward to 12 noon.

Today's Johnny Lowes Mixed Pairs competition had ten entries who each played 4 games of 7 ends. Dennis Jackson and Muriel looked odds on favourites at half time but the full time result saw Cath and Raymond Clark lead the field with 28 points and Robin and Isobel Hurst claiming second place 2 points behind. Luckily the weather held fair with even some sunshine in the latter stages.
Congratulations to Paul Wallace who has reached the semi finals of the County Singles competition. One more win will guarantee a trip to Worthing for the National finals.
The next competition is the Frank Easton triples for Club members. There is currently an odd number of entries so please pass the word round that more entries are required and must total an even number or some teams will have to sit one game out.

I've just received word that the Ladies Open Pairs competition for Saturday 16th June has been cancelled owing to the severe weather conditions and a poor forecast. Disappointing for everyone concerned but the greens are waterlogged after 3 days continual rain.

Sunday 3rd June saw the first of the American tournaments and unfortunately three teams failed to turn up, which was a nightmare for the organiser after all the matches and rinks had been pre-prepared.
The Coors trophy, after four games of seven ends decided the play off places, went to Robbie, Grant and Fred. Gazzer, Colin and Steve took second place whilst two other Silloth teams won semi finalist prizes.
For those who know Silloth, the old railway station and bothy which overlooked the greens have been demolished to make way for a new housing project.

The Silloth BC May Pairs competition fielded twenty eight pairs on a day which fortunately remained fair.
In very competitive semi finals played over nine ends, Des Adair with partner Richard Noble went down by three shots to three times winners Alan Prince and David Blackmore while Stuart Irwin and Keith Harrison lost by one shot to the Silloth pairing of J.J. Graham and partner Colin Irving.
By this time the threatening clouds had lifted and Graham and Irving went on to win the final by nine shots to four.
Silloth President Robbie Litt presented the Trophy and thanked all the players and those concerned with organising the event and providing refreshments throughout the day.
It's the Coors American competition on Sunday 3rd June. This format makes it essential for entry to turn up otherwise other teams have to sit one game out. If you have an entry and are unable to attend please advise as soon as possible.

The weather forecast for the May Pairs doesn't look too promising so fingers crossed for a rain free day.
The following week is the Coors Open American Triples, open to any combination of men and women. It will comprise of four games of seven ends played in two sections of first and second fillings with the winners and runners up of each section going into a knockout play off.
The draw for each filling is published at www.sillothbowlingclub.i12.com and the final draw for the matches will be made next week.

Congratulations to the Silloth team comprising a rink, triple and pair who cleaned up by a comfortable margin at the Wigton BC Festival on Sunday. Seascale BC came second of the four teams present.

When I left the Club tonight, the "A" team were just putting on their wet gear after the first few ends against Wigton Park. That was after the draw was done for the May Pairs open competition on the 28th May. Bank Holiday Monday saw Grant, Fred, Graham and David qualify for the play-offs in the Roland Starkie Competition. Paul Bannister from Cockermouth also qualified in second place. The day was a lot brighter than expected but the threat of torrential rain made the players get a move on before the heavens opened. I'm reliably informed that the greens are in first class condition at the moment.
On Friday the 10th the draw for the May pairs will be made and published in the local press hopefully next week. The limit is 32 entries and one or two places are available for late entries.

Saturday's opening day was a big success with about 40 bowlers turning up. Nearly all played in the jumble run by Robin, followed by a buffet in the lounge bar.

The Townholme Touring Team have had to cancel their visit to Silloth in April, but Carrs Mill have booked their annual bash for the 30th June.
The greens have had their final treatment prior to opening and with a little bit of warm weather should be in first class condition for the start of the season.

Opening day is getting closer and I'm reminded that it's customary for members to provide refreshments such as cake and sandwiches for the event.
I'm very sad to report the death of Alan Robinson after a prolonged illness.
Alan was a keen bowler and former Club Champion who also competed in most of our competitions and league matches.
He was also a competent golfer and was affectionately known as the "Milky Bar Kid" from his resemblence some years ago to the actor in that famous TV advert.
His funeral will be on Friday 16th March at Christ Church, Silloth.

President Robbie Litt and Ladies' President Glyniss Halliwell will formally open the season on Saturday 7th April. Starting time is 1.30pm for 2.00pm and if the weather is fine we will be able to enjoy the usual Jumble. Unusually, opening day falls on Easter Saturday which should ensure a good turn out.

Hopefully I'll soon be able to publish lists of everyone who entered our club open competitions last year and start accepting entries for 2007. A good win for the dominoes team last night at the Letters in Aspatria. It should put us back in contention.

The flag was lowered to half mast this weekend in remembrance of John Bell, affectionately known as Aigle Gill after his farm and to distinguish him from the many other John Bells in the area.
John was a stalwart of Silloth Bowling Club for many years, undertaking four years as President in the '70s when nobody else really wanted the job. He maintained a keen interest in the affairs of the Club as County Representative although being well over 80 years old limited the times he could travel from Aspatria to Silloth in his latter years. John was also held in high esteem in the County as an umpire and team selector.
I haven't any details regarding the funeral but hopefully they will be published in the local press.
On a lighter note, New Year's Day was a success once again with the entertainment proving very popular. Numbers were down slightly on last year but everyone seemed anxious to break the alcohol consumption record. Things quieten down now until the new season starts so don't forget to call in for the odd pint and support the Club.
Application forms for County Competitions are behind the bar and must be completed together with fees by the 25th January.

Well I've finally got round to updating the Club web site by clearing out all the 2006 stuff ready for next season. The revised subscriptions information and list of Officers are completed and on display. The county competition forms are available from behind the bar so please get them completed well before the 31 January deadline. Things have quietened down now as winter sets in. The dominoes and pool teams both seem to be in the middle of their league tables.

Sad to say, but the local idiots are out late at night putting windows out. Not only has the kitchen window been broken twice in as many weeks but the last time included the wired front window glass in Eden Street. We weren't the only ones targetted, as Winters shop and the Community Centre had windows smashed as well. This appears to have happened around 3.30am.
The lounge now looks resplendent with the Christmas decorations up and the next big event is New Year's Day entertainment which has packed locals in for the past few years.
Admission is £2.00 which includes a ticket for several valuable raffle prizes. If you want a seat you'd better get there early.

Well that's the AGM completed tonight. Quite a good turn out for a filthy wet night and everthing went smoothly.
Robbie Litt is this year's President with Charlie Bain as Vice. The officers and committee were re-elected en bloc.
The most satisfying part was presenting the year's accounts, but it has still been agreed to raise subs to £50 and £40 for bowlers and seniors respectively. A lot of money has been spent on the greens since the end of September and more has been allocated to prepare for the start of the season, so hopefully they will be back to the very high quality we used to enjoy before financial cramp took hold.
Don't forget to pay your subs by the due date or you will incur a £5 penalty.

The AGM will be held in the club house at 7.30pm prompt on Monday 4th December. Members wishing to propose notices of motion should forward them to the Secretary for publication on the notice board. Every member entitiled to vote will receive written communication advising the agenda.
Things have quietened down a lot now although we still have teams for dominoes, pool and the carpet bowls. Friday nights are still popular for darts as an alternative to the local darts league.

Presentation night went off nicely but with fewer numbers this year.
The next main event is the AGM, normally the first Monday in December and every member will receive written notice in due course.
If you would like anything to be proposed, please contact Sandra to make sure it goes on the agenda.
The bar is ticking over quite nicely but as always, the more people that support it the better. If you're in town call in for a drink even if it's only an orange juice. The bar is now closed on a Monday night until the start of next season
Entertainment will be provided for New Year's Day as usual and those who have attended in the past will already know that if you want a seat you will have to get in early.

Presentation Night is on Saturday 28th October. 7.00pm for 7.30pm. Tickets are £6.50 each and include entertainment by Freddy Haney and a buffet supper.
Hopefully I'll soon receive a list of all prize winners and publish it here.
The Albion is having a competition on the 1st October and shortly after that work will start on the greens to prepare them for next summer.
Anyone with personal belongings in the locker room is advised to remove them and leave their locker open. I doubt the local yobs have learnt any social responsibility yet so it's better to show them there is nothing to pinch.

Sunday 3rd started with a deluge that flooded the greens so no play was possible for the first filling of the September Pairs Open. As usual, the sun came out after the competition had been abandoned. The dominoes school got an early start and a provisional rearrangement for the competition is Sunday 17th September.
Quite a lot of our members are staying at Kilmarnock next weekend for the annual return match against a local club. Games are arranged for the Saturday and Sunday.
I haven't got the results for the bank holiday weekend tournaments yet except that a Mr Walker's rink won the Byers Trophy.
Annual prize giving and dance has been arranged for 28th October with Freddy Haney providing the entertainment.

Cumbria County Womens BA played Durham at Silloth today. County President Oriole Hocking made all the guests welcome and announced a win for Cumbria by a small margin. Everyone enjoyed the fine weather except for the poor lady who was stung by a wasp.

Bad luck for our boys at Worthing. They lost to Dorset in the first round. No doubt they are disappointed but they are staying on to cheer on the remaining Cumbrian bowlers.

On Sunday, Robin, Grant, Robbie and Gazzer went from strength to strength by winning the Northern Counties Fours final at Heaton Park in Manchester. It's over forty years since a rink from Silloth accomplished the same. The first game against Durham was a fairly easy win but the final against Northumberland was a thriller with Silloth going into the last end three shots down. Lying four shots after Northumberland's last wood was bowled gave Silloth the trophy.
They landed back in the clubhouse about 9.30pm and then the celebrations began.
This put the icing on the cake for Grant who won the Silloth BC open mixed pairs competition with Maisie the day before.
